Search Continues for Three Missing After Boat Capsizes in San Francisco Bay

Rescue teams are actively searching for three individuals who went missing after a boat sank in the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay on Tuesday. The incident occurred near Alcatraz Island during a memorial service, as reported by local authorities.

One person was recovered from the water but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. Sixteen others were successfully rescued following the vessel's capsizing, which took place in what witnesses described as turbulent conditions.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen provided details at a press conference, stating that the boat began taking on water before overturning. When rescuers arrived, the vessel's motor was still operational, and it was leaking fuel into the bay.

Video footage captured the scene, showing rescue boats surrounding the nearly submerged craft, with debris scattered in the water. Tragically, a dog that was on board also did not survive.

The boat, identified as a 50-foot pleasure craft named Volare, was documented out of Stockton, California. It featured a cabin and upper deck, according to Lt. Mariano Elias, a spokesperson for the fire department.

Search efforts have included the use of thermal imaging technology and tide modeling, with teams extending their search into the open ocean west of the Golden Gate Bridge by Tuesday evening. The emergency call regarding the incident was received shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Initial reports indicated that smoke was visible from the boat; however, police officers who first arrived determined it was steam rather than smoke.

The vessel had departed from the St. Francis Yacht Club, making a route that included passing under the Golden Gate Bridge and a stop at Angel Island, a state park in the bay, before heading back.
