Baltimore City Public Schools has confirmed that the 11-year-old boy injured in a double shooting on Wednesday night is a student at Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy.
Police responded to the incident, which occurred around 7:40 p.m. at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Dolphin Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the young boy with a gunshot wound to his abdomen and a 26-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Both victims were quickly transported to a local hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition and expected to survive.
As of Thursday, Baltimore Police reported that no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. During a press conference, Police Commissioner Richard Worley indicated that the shooting involved at least two suspects who fired from a vehicle parked across from the playground of the elementary school. It is believed that the 26-year-old was the intended target, while the 11-year-old was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area to gather more information. However, no descriptions of the suspects or their vehicle have been released at this time.
The shooting took place near a congressional candidate forum, where incumbent Kweisi Mfume and challenger Mark Conway were discussing local issues such as crime and public safety. Reverend Al Hathaway, who was involved in hosting the forum, condemned the violence, stating, "We cannot normalize that behavior. It is abhorrent, and we need to eradicate it." He urged the shooter to turn themselves in.
In response to the incident, the principal of Furman L. Templeton Preparatory Academy sent a letter to parents to address the situation. The Baltimore Police Department is encouraging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
