Student Arrested After Gun Incident on Hammond High School Bus

COLUMBIA, Md. — A significant police presence was noted at Hammond High School on Thursday morning following reports of a student with a firearm.

According to Howard County Police, an alert student informed school administration and the school resource officer about another student possessing a gun. The resource officer successfully located the individual on campus and confiscated an unloaded handgun.

Initial investigations suggest that the firearm was first observed on a school bus before arriving at the school.

In response to the situation, Howard County Public Schools sent a letter to parents emphasizing their commitment to student safety. The letter stated, "School safety is our utmost priority, and the members of the administrative team and security staff will continue to be vigilant in maintaining the safety of Hammond High School." It also reassured parents that all reports of threats are taken seriously and that the school will collaborate with public safety agencies.

The student involved is a 15-year-old boy. Detectives have indicated that there were no specific threats made prior to his arrest.

At the time of the incident, Hammond High School was conducting summer programming.
