Summer Closures for Three Red Line Stops in Montgomery County

Starting Monday, three stations on the WMATA Red Line will close for summer construction, with plans to reopen on September 6. The affected stops are Bethesda, Medical Center, and Grosvenor-Strathmore.

To facilitate travel during this period, the State Highway Administration is implementing 7.5 miles of temporary bus lanes along Rockville Pike. These lanes will be operational from the Friendship Heights to North Bethesda stations starting Monday.

Access to the bus lanes will be restricted for general traffic from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., except on Sundays, and parking in these lanes will not be allowed.

The closures are part of ongoing construction efforts, including the addition of a second mezzanine at the Bethesda station to accommodate the upcoming Purple Line, which will connect Bethesda to New Carrollton.

During the closure, Metro will provide free shuttle buses every five to eight minutes to connect riders to North Bethesda, Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda, and Friendship Heights. The shuttles are expected to maintain a travel time of approximately 10 minutes between stops.

Additionally, express shuttle buses will offer direct service between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights, with a travel time of about 26 minutes along Rockville Pike.

For more details on shuttle bus stop locations, travelers can visit the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's official website.

The northern section of the newly established bus lane, from the Beltway to Marinelli Road, will be assessed for potential permanent implementation, as noted in a recent county news release.
