On July 18, a group of supporters gathered outside the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office to defend former State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby. They expressed concerns over what they perceive as a politically motivated effort to discredit her and potentially revoke her law license.
The protest was sparked by Mosby’s recent assertion that current State’s Attorney Ivan Bates had filed a formal complaint with the Attorney Grievance Commission regarding her handling of the Adnan Syed case.
Tyrone W. Bost, an organizer of the protest and a member of the Committee to Free Marilyn Mosby, stated, “All this stuff filed to the Attorney Grievance [Commission], it’s nothing more than an attempt to make her look bad when they go to try to take her law license.”
In 2022, Mosby’s administration had filed a motion to vacate Adnan Syed’s conviction for the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, citing concerns about withheld evidence and the reliability of key evidence presented during the original trial. While the state did not declare Syed innocent, it argued that the original trial was unfair and warranted a new trial, a position that was initially upheld by a judge.
However, Bates later withdrew the motion, claiming it contained “false and misleading statements that undermine the integrity of the judicial process.” This change has drawn criticism from Mosby’s supporters, who feel that Bates is not honoring his campaign promises regarding Syed’s case.
Bost emphasized the need for transparency in the decision-making process surrounding Mosby and the Syed case, stating, “The whole thing just stinks. We are not going to give him the privacy to do this stuff behind closed doors.”
The AFRO American Newspapers reached out to the State’s Attorney’s Office for comment on the complaint but received a response indicating that filings are confidential and they could not provide further details.
