Elkton Police have arrested a man suspected of stealing a company truck, thanks in part to the vehicle's onboard GPS and dash camera. The incident began when the truck was reported stolen from a repair and service business adjacent to the Flying J Travel Center in Elkton.
According to Elkton Police Sgt. Thomas Saulsbury, officers responded to the scene and learned that the truck was equipped with GPS tracking and a camera. The GPS data indicated the vehicle traveled from Maryland to Pennsylvania.
In Philadelphia, the truck was discovered abandoned after having collided with two other vehicles and a bridge. Saulsbury noted that video footage suggested the driver, identified as 36-year-old Jeremy Grace from Middletown, Delaware, appeared to be under the influence of drugs during the incidents.
Police suspect that Grace may have stolen the truck to facilitate drug use, as he wrecked the vehicle multiple times while in Philadelphia. After the theft, Elkton police released images of the suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest.
Grace was ultimately apprehended by another police department in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he was stopped for a separate theft. During the arrest, he was found in possession of drugs.
The theft has significant implications for the owners of the truck, as it was one of only two vehicles they used for service calls, severely impacting their business operations.
Grace is currently in custody in Virginia and awaits extradition to Maryland, where he will face felony theft charges. Sgt. Saulsbury remarked on the irony of the situation, stating that Grace likely did not realize he had stolen a vehicle equipped with surveillance capabilities.
