A 16-year-old boy from Prince George’s County has been arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department in connection with a violent brawl that occurred inside a Chipotle restaurant in the Navy Yard area of Washington, D.C.
The juvenile, whose identity has not been disclosed due to privacy laws surrounding minors, was taken into custody on Thursday. The incident, which was widely circulated on social media in May, showed a chaotic scene with teenagers engaging in physical confrontations, climbing on tables, and throwing chairs, while other patrons attempted to avoid the chaos.
At one point during the altercation, a young individual was seen brandishing a wooden high chair, using it to strike others involved in the fight. By the time police arrived at the scene, the group had already dispersed.
The incident has sparked discussions among local officials regarding how to manage large gatherings of teenagers in public areas and address the potential for violence. Following the brawl, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a public emergency and introduced an extended juvenile curfew.
While some D.C. council members have expressed hesitance toward implementing a curfew on an emergency basis, a permanent curfew was established earlier in May, prior to the Chipotle incident, and is set to take effect after a congressional review period.
In Prince George’s County, a summer juvenile curfew has been in place at National Harbor since 2024, aimed at curbing incidents involving unaccompanied youths. This curfew prohibits individuals under the age of 17 from being in the area without an adult during specified hours on weekends.
Officials, including Brian Fischer from the county executive’s office, have noted a decrease in incidents involving young people since the introduction of the curfew. Fischer emphasized that these measures provide parents with tools to ensure their children are home safely at night.
Laurel Mayor Keith Sydnor has also enacted a summer youth curfew, running from June 18 to September 8, in response to previous disturbances at local venues. The aim of these curfews, according to Sydnor, is to prevent potential conflicts while also providing constructive activities for youth.
As the investigation continues, D.C. police are actively seeking information from the public to identify additional teens involved in the Chipotle brawl.
