BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — A teenager from West Baltimore has been taken into custody following the fatal shooting of two siblings in their Gwynn Oak home earlier this month.
Police Chief Robert McCullough confirmed that 16-year-old Keith Maurice James Jr. has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of 15-year-old Giovanna "Gigi" Myrie and her 9-year-old brother, Steve Allen.
The tragic incident occurred on July 7, when the children's mother returned home around 7:20 p.m. to find both of her children unresponsive. Emergency responders were dispatched to the residence in the 6100 block of Talles Road, where they pronounced the children dead at the scene.
According to police reports, Steve was discovered shot in a bedroom, while Gigi was found in the hallway. Chief McCullough indicated that James, who was known to both siblings, had visited their home several days prior to the incident.
During a press conference, Chief McCullough expressed his sorrow over the loss of young lives, stating, "You know, you remember every child, and it's not only children, but even young people. It's just even more tragic.”
A funeral service for the siblings took place on July 21 at St. Casimir Church in Canton, where hundreds gathered to pay their respects.
James, who was recently turned 16, is currently being held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center. As of July 22, authorities have not established a motive for the shootings.
