GWYNN OAK, Md. — The Baltimore County Police Department is investigating a tragic double homicide that has claimed the lives of two siblings in Gwynn Oak. The alleged perpetrator, Keith Maurice James, 16, has been arrested and charged with the murders of 15-year-old Giovanna Myrie and her 9-year-old brother, Steve Allen.
According to police reports, the children's mother left for work around 7 a.m. on July 7 and last communicated with Giovanna via text around 4 p.m. Upon returning home after 7 p.m., she discovered both children had been shot. Giovanna was found in her bed with multiple gunshot wounds, while Steve was found near the hallway.
Witnesses have revealed that Giovanna and Keith had recently begun a relationship. They reportedly met at her home on July 4, where a witness observed Keith holding a gun while in bed with Giovanna. During that encounter, Keith allegedly threatened Giovanna, stating he would kill her if she were unfaithful. A text message from Giovanna corroborated this threat, indicating she felt endangered.
Investigators traced Keith’s movements on the night of the murders through cell phone records and surveillance footage. His phone was located near Giovanna's home at the time of the incident. Further footage showed him leaving the area wearing a mask and hood, but with identifiable clothing from earlier that day.
During an interview with police, Keith acknowledged his previous contact with Giovanna but denied meeting her on the night she was killed. Despite his denial, authorities believe the evidence gathered is sufficient to charge him with the crime.
Keith is now facing charges as an adult and is scheduled for a bail review on Thursday at 1 p.m. Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough emphasized the importance of parents knowing their children's friends and relationships in light of this tragedy.
