Traffic Fatalities in Maryland Rise to 22 in June Amid Deadly Summer Stretch

Maryland is currently experiencing a concerning rise in traffic fatalities, with the state recording 22 deaths in June alone. This increase comes as Maryland transportation officials highlight the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day as the "100 deadliest days" for traffic accidents.

As of June 16, the state had reported approximately 13 traffic deaths for the month, but this number has escalated significantly in just a week. According to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), a total of 173 individuals have lost their lives on Maryland roadways this year, a slight decrease from the 207 fatalities recorded during the same period last year.

In response to this alarming trend, both MDOT and the Maryland State Police are intensifying their efforts to promote road safety throughout the summer travel season. They are urging drivers to adhere to several critical safety guidelines:

  • Obey posted speed limits and reduce speed in work zones.
  • Move over for any emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights or slow down if changing lanes is unsafe.
  • Avoid distractions while driving, including mobile phones and other activities that divert attention from the road.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Always wear seat belts, both in the front and back seats.
  • Share the road responsibly with pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
  • Practice patience and avoid aggressive driving behaviors.

As the summer progresses, officials continue to emphasize the importance of safe driving practices to prevent further tragedies on Maryland's roads.
