Tragic Fire Claims Lives of Three Firefighters in Southwest Baltimore

BALTIMORE — A devastating fire in a vacant rowhome in southwest Baltimore has led to the loss of three firefighters' lives, with a fourth currently in critical condition. The incident occurred early Monday morning in the 200 block of S. Stricker Street.

According to Fire Chief Niles Ford, firefighters responded to the scene around 6 a.m. to find the three-story rowhome engulfed in flames. During the operation, multiple firefighters issued a 'Mayday' call after becoming trapped inside the structure.

Efforts to rescue the trapped firefighters involved the mobilization of a special rescue team. Chief Ford reported that one firefighter was quickly rescued, but the remaining three were still in danger as crews worked to clear debris blocking their exit.

Within an hour, two of the trapped firefighters were successfully removed and transported to Shock Trauma, where they were listed in serious condition. Unfortunately, two of the fallen firefighters succumbed to cardiac arrest at the scene, as confirmed by Shock Trauma's chief physician, Thomas Scalea.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating, 'Every day our firefighters put their lives on the line for the sake of others. Today, three firefighters lost their lives in service to our city.'

Governor Larry Hogan also issued a statement, expressing condolences and ordering flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen heroes. He remarked, 'Our hearts are broken for the entire Baltimore City Fire Department as three of our bravest have fallen in the line of duty.'

The vacant rowhome had a history of fires, having previously caught fire seven years ago, resulting in injuries to another firefighter.
