Trial for York Road Mass Shooting Continues with Closing Arguments

The trial of Cassandra McRae, 37, and Tavon Singleton, 35, related to a mass shooting on York Road, resumed on April 3 as closing arguments continued past 5 p.m. before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Dana M. Middleton.

Both defendants face charges including first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of 52-year-old Antoinette Jennings, which occurred on January 22, 2025, following a dispute that arose during a children’s basketball game.

According to charging documents, the confrontation between Jennings and McRae escalated after an argument at the game, leading to a fatal encounter on York Road. Reports indicate that McRae approached Jennings' vehicle, prompting a male suspect to open fire, resulting in Jennings' death and injuries to her granddaughter and son.

McRae took the stand in her defense, stating her intention was to de-escalate the situation and claiming she was attacked during the altercation. However, the prosecution challenged her credibility, questioning why she did not contact law enforcement during or after the incident.

The state’s attorney argued that McRae's refusal to let the matter go led to the tragic outcome, asserting that her actions demonstrated intent to kill Jennings. The prosecution contended that McRae's behavior met the criteria for a first-degree murder conviction.

Defense attorney Michael Tomko countered the prosecution's claims, suggesting that there was insufficient evidence to support the theory that McRae orchestrated the shooting. He urged the jury to consider a verdict of not guilty.

The trial is expected to conclude later today with closing arguments from Singleton’s attorney, Daniel Mooney, followed by a rebuttal from the prosecution.
