Two adults were tragically found dead in their home in Clarksburg this past Saturday, with carbon monoxide poisoning suspected as the cause.
Emergency responders from Montgomery County Police and Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene located in the 12700 block of Fernberry Lane after receiving a distress call. Upon arrival, they pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
Investigators discovered a running vehicle in the garage, which is believed to have significantly increased the levels of carbon monoxide in the home, as reported by the fire department on social media.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed, and authorities confirmed that no additional victims were present. Firefighters subsequently ventilated the residence to mitigate any further risk.
Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the “invisible killer” due to its colorless and odorless nature. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 150 individuals in the United States lose their lives each year due to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning that is not related to fires.
Safety experts advise homeowners to install and regularly maintain carbon monoxide detectors in central locations outside of sleeping areas and on every level of the house. More information on carbon monoxide safety can be found through the U.S. Fire Administration.
