CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — Law enforcement officials have apprehended two individuals suspected of stealing a significant number of bronze memorial vases from Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf.
The thefts reportedly took place during two separate periods: from June 8 to June 21 and again from July 4 to July 6.
On July 8, detectives conducted a search in the vicinity and discovered several garbage cans filled with the stolen bronze vases.
Investigators linked the evidence found at the scene to the suspects, identified as Trey Mason and David Downing. It was determined that up to 100 of the vases taken during the initial time frame had been sold to a local scrap metal recycling facility.
The recovered vases are estimated to be worth more than $100,000. Maryland law prohibits scrap metal dealers from buying or accepting cemetery-related bronze items, including memorial vases, markers, and plaques.
Mason and Downing now face multiple charges, including theft scheme, destruction of property, and fraud.
