A local union leader has filed an assault complaint against Maryland Delegate Gabriel Acevero following a physical altercation that occurred outside an early-voting site in Gaithersburg on Thursday evening.
The incident took place around 6 p.m. at the Bohrer Park Activity Center, which was serving as an early-voting location. Both men accuse each other of initiating the confrontation, which reportedly involved punches being thrown.
Gino Renne, the union leader and president of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO, is seeking a misdemeanor second-degree assault charge against Acevero. Meanwhile, Acevero has indicated he will also file charges against Renne.
According to police, no arrests were made at the scene since both individuals had been separated by the time officers arrived. They advised those involved to pursue charges through the District Court commissioner’s office. Reports indicate that one person sustained minor injuries, though police did not specify who it was.
Renne, 72, claims the altercation began when a union staff member pointed out that Acevero was campaigning beyond the legally permitted boundary. He stated that after a verbal exchange, Acevero allegedly punched him, causing him to fall over a table and sustain injuries to his leg and elbow.
In response, Acevero, 35, contends that he was acting in self-defense, stating that Renne had swung at him first. He characterized Renne's actions as verbal harassment that escalated into physical confrontation.
A summons for a preliminary hearing has been issued to Acevero, scheduled for July 28 in Montgomery County District Court. Acevero, a Democrat, is currently defending his seat representing District 39, which encompasses Montgomery Village and nearby areas, in the upcoming primary on Tuesday.
