Authorities have released the identities of the pilot and two passengers who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in Bowie, Maryland, on Saturday evening.
The aircraft, a single-engine Piper Cherokee, was en route from Ocean City, New Jersey, to the Montgomery County Air Park in Gaithersburg when it went down around 11:30 PM. Search and rescue teams located the wreckage a few hours later in a residential area near Scarlett Oak Court.
The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Yoav Bomrind, a pilot from Israel, and his passengers: 19-year-old David Rabinovitz, also from Israel, and 20-year-old Elad Naidik from Canada. All three men perished in the incident, which authorities initially believed to be a training flight.
According to Flight Aware, the plane is owned by Washington International Flight Academy LLC., based in Gaithersburg. A preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration indicated that the aircraft crashed into a tree under unknown circumstances.
Flight Aware's records show that the plane reached altitudes of up to 8,800 feet and recorded speeds of 130 mph during its flight. Its last recorded speed before the crash was 62 mph at an altitude of 300 feet.
Earlier that same day, the plane had successfully landed in Ocean City, New Jersey, at approximately 5:42 PM. The National Transportation Safety Board is now leading the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
