Victor Ramirez Set to Rejoin Prince George's County Council After Primary Win

Victor Ramirez, a familiar face in Prince George’s County politics, is on track to return to public office after securing a decisive victory in the Democratic primary for the District 2 seat on the County Council. With nearly 63% of the vote, Ramirez is set to represent an area he has called home for most of his life.

Born in El Salvador, Ramirez moved to Mount Rainier as a child and has spent the majority of his adult life in Hyattsville, where he raised a family of four. His political career spans nearly two decades, having served as a state representative and senator from 2003 to 2019.

Despite facing electoral setbacks in recent years, including a primary loss for Prince George’s County state’s attorney in 2018 and a narrow defeat for the District 2 council seat in 2022, Ramirez's determination led him back to the political arena. He expressed his commitment to the county, stating, “I love Prince George’s County. That’s one of the reasons I chose to run, is because I care about it.”

His return comes at a crucial time for the County Council, amid ongoing legal disputes with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission regarding financial management. Ramirez has refrained from commenting on these issues, emphasizing that it is premature to address matters before officially joining the council.

Ramirez aims to enhance the commercial tax base in his district, recognizing the need to diversify revenue sources beyond residential property taxes. He sees potential in developing areas around Hyattsville and along the Metro to generate additional income, similar to strategies used in neighboring jurisdictions.

As he prepares to take office, Ramirez is focused on building trust with constituents, ensuring that government services are efficient and responsive to community needs. “For me, I think it’s making sure our services are being run as efficient and as effective as possible,” he stated.
