Waverly Farmer’s Market Celebrates Mulberry Madness with Festivities

The Waverly Farmer’s Market will host Mulberry Madness on June 20, a celebration sponsored by the Baltimore Orchard Project (BOP). This event aims to highlight the often-overlooked mulberry fruit, which is native to Maryland.

As part of the festivities, BOP organized a poetry contest for students inspired by mulberries. Winners will be announced at 11:15 a.m. at the BOP stand. The high school winner will receive a $100 prize and a native fruit tree of their choice, while the elementary and middle school winner will earn $50 and also select a native fruit tree.

Attendees can enjoy free samples of mulberry jam from Atwaters, mulberry-inspired treats from Gertrude’s restaurant, and a mulberry-infused cocktail mix available for purchase from Baltimore Spirits. To further promote the fruit, a complimentary recipe booklet will be distributed, featuring ideas for making muffins, cobbler, and other mulberry-based dishes.

Additionally, Baltimore city residents will have the opportunity to receive a free fruit tree or shrub on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

The Baltimore Orchard Project is a nonprofit organization focused on planting orchards and harvesting native fruit trees in urban areas, enhancing food access and community ecosystems. Since its establishment, BOP has donated thousands of pounds of food and contributed to the planting of fruit and nut trees to support those in need.

The Waverly Farmer’s Market is located at 400 E. 32nd Street and operates from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
