Construction Laborer – Trenching & Underground Utilities


The Construction Laborer supports underground utility, trenching, and duct-bank installation crews by performing physical and semi-skilled tasks on active construction sites. This position works closely with equipment operators and foremen to support the safe, efficient, and high-quality installation of underground infrastructure for large-scale site development projects. The Laborer must demonstrate safety awareness, teamwork, reliability, and the ability to work in a fast-paced construction environment.

5+ years of experience in underground utilities, excavation, trenching, or site developmentPerforms complex trenching tasks with minimal supervisionLeads by example on safety and productivityAssists foremen and mentors junior laborersCan operate smaller pieces of equipment efficiently such as a Skid Steer.OSHA 10 or 30 strongly preferred; trench safety or Competent Person a plusKey Responsibilities


Site & Utility Support


Assist in trenching, pipe laying, duct-bank, and vault installationPerform manual excavation, trench cleanout, and hand digging as requiredPrepare, clean, and maintain work areas, trenches, and equipmentHand-grade, backfill, and compact soil using shovels, tampers, or mechanical compactorsAssist with setting, moving, and removing trench boxes, slide-rail systems, and shoring equipmentInstall conduit spacers, tracer wire, and encasement for electrical and communication duct banksSupport concrete encasement and formwork placement under supervisionAssist with site restoration activities, including grading and surface preparationSpot, signal, and communicate with heavy equipment operators during excavation and backfillingSafety & Compliance


Comply with all company safety policies and proceduresFollow OSHA regulations, including OSHA Subpart P (Trenching & Excavation)Participate in daily safety briefings, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) meetings, and toolbox talksProperly use required personal protective equipment at all times (PPE)Maintain awareness of excavation hazards, underground utilities, traffic, and heavy equipmentPromptly report unsafe conditions, incidents, or near misses to supervisionAssist with traffic control, barricading, and trench protection as assignedEquipment & Material Handling


Load, unload, and organize materials, tools, and equipmentPerform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of tools and equipmentSafely operate hand tools and small power toolsAssist with verifying measurements, grades, elevations, and alignmentTeamwork & Productivity

Required


Minimum of 5 years of experience in underground utilities, site development, excavation, or general constructionKnowledge of trenching, shoring, and safe excavation practicesAbility to understand and follow verbal and written instructions in EnglishReliable transportation to job sites within the regionWillingness to comply with drug testing and company safety requirementsConsistent attendance, punctuality, and strong commitment to teamworkPreferred


OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety CertificationExperience supporting mission-critical infrastructure projectsFamiliarity with duct-bank installation, conduit alignment, or vault installationTrench safety training or Competent Person designationPhysical Requirements


Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods (8–10 hours per day)Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in trenchesAbility to lift and carry up to 50 poundsAbility to work outdoors in varying weather conditionsAbility to safely wear required personal protective equipmentWork Environment
