Correctional Maintenance Crew Chief

Duties

Under general supervision, assigns, leads, checks, and performs general maintenance and repair work throughout County correctional facilities.
  • Makes work schedules and approves leave. Receives repair requests. Assigns work to individual workers or small crews based upon priorities and skills needed to accomplish the work. Resolves problems encountered at work sites in order to ensure completion of assignments.
  • Leads and participates in the work of a crew or crews performing maintenance and repair projects to the physical structure of, and electrical, mechanical, heating, and air conditioning systems and equipment. Consults with and requests the response of skilled trades workers or contractors.
  • Instructs and follows security procedures and reports observed security infractions. Instructs correctional maintenance workers and inmates on proper procedures or techniques and provides informal training as needed.
  • Schedules and performs regular inspections of facilities and equipment.
  • Prepares estimates and reports of labor and materials costs. Requisitions supplies for entire work group.
  • Operates a vehicle to travel between facilities.
Examples of Other Duties
May transport workers or supplies to work sites. May oversee contractual work. May assist with security or large clean up operations in emergencies. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Four years' experience in building construction, maintenance, or repair work with at least one year's experience at the journeyman level in general building maintenance or a building trade. (Related training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the non-journeyman experience.)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level):

Journeyman level knowledge of building maintenance and operations practices and techniques. Knowledge of building codes related to building maintenance and repair. Knowledge of materials and procedures used in the building trades.

Skill in the operation and maintenance of building systems and equipment. Skill in using manual and power tools and equipment required to perform routine repair and maintenance of building facilities, systems, and equipment. Skill in interpreting building plans and sketches.

Ability to understand and practice safety and security procedures for correctional facilities. Ability to schedule, assist, and lead others in activities of building maintenance, renovation, installation, and repair. Ability to maintain work records and prepare simple reports. Ability to communicate effectively.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Full Performance)
Knowledge of the County correctional buildings and building systems. Knowledge of County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing performance of duties, especially safety and security procedures for County correctional facilities.

Skill in accomplishing work assignments by leading others and participating in the work.

Ability to oversee contractual work.

Character Requirement
Persons appointed to this classification must be of good moral character and emotionally stable as determined by a comprehensive background investigation and a drug test.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
