Job Summary

A Public Safety Supervisor serves as a first line supervisor responsible for scheduling, directing, training, and supervising personnel performing the public safety function for the Convention Center.  Public Safety Supervisors prepare reports as needed; investigates and reviews all reported incidents; prepares, completes, and reviews evaluations and other administrative tasks; and provides security and safety for guests, employees, contractors, property, and the facility. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Safety.  Routine assignments are carried out in accordance with State, City, and other applicable regulations and codes with established practices and procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Provides the security and safety of guests, employees, property and the facility.
  • Responds to requests for assistance and information in a helpful and courteous manner.
  • Monitors and controls movement and conduct of Public Safety Officers and public during events.
  • Enforces rules and regulations and maintains order at and in the vicinity of the Convention Center.
  • Ensures that personnel react and report their involvement in assignments and activity in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Reports all significant incidents in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.
  • Ensures on-going routine activities are accomplished timely.
  • Monitors two-way communication console, fire, and life safety systems.
  • Provides and/or facilitates the initial and on-going training for Public Safety staff.
  • Assists in the preparation, execution, and wrap-up of events of departmental needs as required or directed.
  • Provides written reports to Director of Building Services and Assistant Director of Public Safety relative to any personnel issues.
  • Conducts daily inspection of the facility.
  • Collaborates with Assistant Director regarding attendance monitoring, counsels, and recommends disciplinary action.
  • Reviews subordinates’ written reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensures staff maintains proper care of uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
  • Keeps informed of facility activities to ensure proper scheduling and assignment of staff.
  • Conducts briefings with Public Safety staff regarding assignments, activities in the facility, and dissemination of pertinent departmental information.
  • Ensures personnel report for duty on time and that shifts are staffed appropriately.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED Certification.

AND

Experience: Five years of security officer experience or related experience, with at least Three years of supervisory experience.*Resume should demonstrate work history and required skills for this position.

OR

Equivalency Notes: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment with facility regulations and security policies and practices.
  • Ability to diplomatically and tactfully resolve difficult and sensitive situations.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays to provide 24/7 coverage.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to foster a welcoming, effective, and efficient environment for clients, guests, contractors, employees, and co-workers.
  • Possess exceptional ethics, honesty, and integrity as well as respect for confidentiality.
  • Enforce Baltimore City Policies, Baltimore Convention Center Policies, and Public Safety Policies. 
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Possess strong customer/guest service skills.
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of general Microsoft Office programs.
  • Knowledge of departmental safety and security procedures and practices.

Background Check

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening, and must be successfully completed.

Probation

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a 6-month mandatory probation.
