DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Coordinator of Student Access and Achievement, the leader of the program provides leadership for the coordination of the Scholars Leadership Honors Program (SLHP) countywide program, including the thirteen high school chapters and advisors.  In collaboration with school-based administrators and community partners, the program’s advisor works to address academic and social-emotional learning factors that influence students’ success and well-being.  


 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all the qualifications below to be considered for the vacancy.

Education:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, a social science, or a related field (must scan and upload to the online application). Experience: 

  • Demonstrated experience supporting diverse high school students and their families within U.S. educational settings.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  

  • Ability to work collaboratively with people of different backgrounds.  

  • Evidence of successful interpersonal skills that will enable the candidate to communicate and work collaboratively with administrators, central office staff, students, teachers, families, and other stakeholder groups.  

  • Proficiency with web-based productivity and collaboration tools (Google Suite preferred or Microsoft Office Suite).  


 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience analyzing data and making data-driven decisions.  

  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity. 

  • Experience working on equity, advocacy, or related projects.  

  • Experience working with community organizations or government agencies.  

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The list below is a summary of the functions of the job, not an exhaustive or comprehensive list of all possible job responsibilities, tasks, and duties.

  • Plans, manages and provides leadership for the Scholars Leadership Honors Program. 

  • Conducts quarterly meetings with SLHP Advisors to offer professional learning opportunities.

  • Collaborates with Scholars Leadership Honors Program school-based advisors to review, select, and invite qualified students to apply for participation in the program.

  • Plans and facilitates parent and family engagement meetings to provide valuable information, foster collaboration, and enhance understanding of the program’s goals, resources, and impact on student success.

  • Leads and mentors the (student-led) Scholar System-wide Team, providing guidance, support, and leadership development opportunities to empower students in planning, organizing, and executing program initiatives, events, and community engagement activities.

  • Supports, monitors, and addresses academic, social, college, career-readiness needs and competencies of the Scholars.

  • Manages and assists with recruitment, support, and evaluation of the Scholars Leadership Honors Program.

  • Collects and analyzes academic data on the Scholars and submits it to designated school-based and central office staff two calendar weeks after each quarter.

  • Creates, implements, and supports system-wide and school-based SLHP activities. 

  • Creates and presents a calendar for Scholars meetings, events, and community service projects.

  • Provides assistance to SLHP Advisors to support monitoring Scholars' academic performance and issues Scholars' probation and/or dismissal letters, as necessary.

  • Provides assistance to SLHP Advisors to support Scholars in establishing community service projects, writing college application essays, completing college and career interest inventories, obtaining job references, and college recommendations, as appropriate.

  • Follows all Howard County Board of Education policies and procedures. 

  • Collaborate with and engage the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Columbia Alumnae Chapter to support the mission and objectives of the Scholars Leadership Honors Program.

  • Reviews the annual partnership agreement between the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and HCPSS to ensure alignment of the vision and goals of the program. 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 

This position is limited to 17 hours per week. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is exempt from overtime.

SELECTION CRITERIA 

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be included in further evaluation. The evaluation may be a rating of your application based on your education, training, and experience as they relate to the requirements and preferred qualifications of the position. Interviews will be limited to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, have experience and education which most closely match the position qualifications and the needs of the school system.  

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

Compensation

$35 per hour. 

The current hourly rate for this position is determined by the current budget allocations of the Howard County Public School System.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Professional references will be contacted prior to any offer of employment. Recommended candidates will be required to provide references from current and recent supervisors.

All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
