Job Summary
Theconstructionskilledlaborerhelpsthepipelayerbyperformingdutiesrequiringtechnicalexperience.Dutiesincludeassistingwithlayingpipeforstormorsanitationsewers,drains, andwatermains. S/hemayassistintheperformanceofanycombinationofthefollowingtasks: gradetrenchesorculverts, position pipe,orsealjoints.Inadditiontoassistingpipelayers,theskilledlaboreralsoworksdiggingtrenchesfor/aroundexistingutilities,manuallyhelpwithensuringappropriategrading, andmovematerials/tools. Theskilledlaborerplaysamajordaytodayroletokeepworksitescleanandcompliant.
Duties & Responsibilities
Cleanorprepareconstructionsitestoeliminatepossiblehazards and prepare forplacementofaggregates,road/substrate,orutilities.Signalequipmentoperatorstoalign,moveoradjustmachinery,equipment,ormaterialsLoad,unload, and/oridentifymaterialsandtoolsDigditchesortrenchesfor/aroundexistingutilities, back-fillexcavations, grade andleveltrenches;mayusetampingmachine and/orhandtools. NOTE: May betrainedtooperatesomeheavierequipment.Performsgeneralconstructionwork(usinghandtools,liftingmaterialsonaverageupto50pounds)underdirectionofPipe Layer, Crew Leader, ForemanorSupervisor.Mayperformflaggingdutiestocontrol andmaintainflowoftrafficinworkzone.Performotherduties, as andwhenassigned.Undersupervisionofpipelayersorsupervision,mayusetoolstoverifygrading/levelsurface.Assistinaligningpipesmanuallyduringpipelineconstruction(generallyforwetutilities[water/sewer]).Assisttoconnectpipes andsealjointsusingglue,cement,gasketsand/orflanges.
Qualifications
Musthavephysicalabilitytostandstrenuousanddangerousworkenvironment. Must becomfortableworkingin 15ft -20fttrenchesandotherconfinedspaces.Hasphysicalstrengthdigandperformgenerallaborwithlaborercrews,includingdiggingbyhandandlifting/pushing/pullingmaterials.Abletocommunicateeffectivelywithothersandworkcooperativelyinteams(includingresolvingbasicconflictswithorwithouttheassistanceofmanagement).Handleemergencysituations,workpressureand stress.Abletosolvebasic,common-senseproblemsusingexperienceandconstructionknowledge.Musthave a flexible schedule(makeworkirregularoroddhoursinoutdoorworksites,dependinguponprojectneedsorweather),includingnightsandweekends.Musthaveaccesstoowntransportationtoreachnon-standardworksitesduringnon-standardhours.
