Duties

(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimal qualifications and salary level for this class. They are not intended to include all of the essential functions of the class.) 

  • Schedules and coordinates all Waste Management System (WMS) repairs for vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Schedules and coordinates all contracted equipment repairs with the immediate supervisor until completion. 
  • Performs heavy maintenance and repairs on equipment such as final drive seals, engine, and transmission repairs. 
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles; completes undercarriage replacement/rehabilitation for heavy-duty truck repairs.
  • Monitors expenditures for parts and materials; performs rebuild as determined by analysis of problem. 
  • Assumes role of Team Leader for lower-level mechanics; guides, directs, and supervises as lead worker in accomplishing tasks.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, records, and tracks monthly statements; creates computerized work orders in Cass Works; and contacts vendors on price and parts availability. 
  • Participates in the Bureau's initiative to increase recycling at each facility and countywide. 
  • Operates fuel service truck; maintains Class A CDL with HazMat and Tanker Endorsement. Performs related duties as required. 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, testing devices, and techniques used in the repair of heavy automotive equipment and vehicles, including gasoline and diesel engines and hydraulic systems. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines, associated electrical and hydraulic equipment, and computerized instrumentation systems. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. 
  • Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive and heavy-duty equipment repair work. 
  • Superior ability to diagnose defects in automotive and heavy-duty equipment, including the use of computerized diagnostic tools. 
  • Ability to train and supervise other workers. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications, and diagrams.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from high school or vocational school supplemented by special courses in electrical, hydraulic, or instrumentation systems.
Experience: Two ( 2 ) or more years of experience in skilled work in the diagnosis and repair of complex diesel or gasoline-powered vehicles, equipment and ancillary systems. 

Additional Requirements: 
  • A valid Class A CDL with Hazardous Materials and Tanker endorsements
  • ASE certifications including T1 (Gasoline Engines), T2 (Diesel Engines), T4 (Brakes), and T8 (Preventative Maintenance Inspections) or the ability to obtain such certifications within six (6) months.

NOTE: This is a safety sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and alcohol testing. NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.
