Job Summary:
A Maintenance Technician Apprentice receives classroom and on-the-job training in maintenance and repair of electrical or mechanical equipment in a water or waste water treatment plant or pumping station. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a rotating shift with evening, night, week-end, holiday and call-back hours as required. Work is performed in an electrical or mechanical workshop or in a water or waste water treatment plant or pumping station where there may be occasional exposure to chemicals, dust and fumes, extremes of heat and cold, noxious odors and moving equipment. Work requires regular moderate physical exertion with occasional strenuous physical exertion when repairing large or hard-to reach equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
Education: Have graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
OR
Equivalency Notes: Have six months of experience in mechanical or electrical maintenance and repair work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management may be required.
PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Background Check
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
Probation
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-months.
Eligibility
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
Education Accreditation
Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
Selection Process
All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. Vagueness or omission may prevent you from being considered for this position. Qualified candidates will not be listed in rank order.
Examination Process
Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months.
The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete supplemental questions to further examine specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the position. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.
SCOPE OF THE MULTIPLE-CHOICE TEST: The multiple-choice examination is designed to evaluate each candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities in areas such as:
- Reading and comprehension of technical materials; Mechanical aptitude.
- Basic mathematics.
- Safety practices and procedures.
- Record keeping.
- Following directions.
CANDIDATES INDICATING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ON THEIR APPLICATIONS WILL BE NOTIFIED WHEN AND WHERE TO APPEAR FOR THE EXAMINATION. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SIT FOR THE EXAMINATION UNLESS YOU PRESENT YOUR MARYLAND DRIVER'S LICENSE OR EMPLOYEE PHOTO ID CARD TO THE TEST MONITOR PRIOR TO THE TEST ADMINISTRATION.
VETERANS' PREFERENCE: Honorably discharged U.S. Armed Forces veterans (with 90 consecutive days on active duty not including active duty as a Reservist or National Guardsmen. The Veteran must have passed all parts of the examination and shall be otherwise found eligible for employment. Late submissions will not be accepted.
RESIDENTS' PREFERENCE: Baltimore City residents submitting applications on or before the closing date who pass all parts of the examination are entitled to residents' preference. At the time of application, a legible photocopy of a valid Maryland Driver's License or Maryland Identification Card issued by the MVA with a street address within the Baltimore City limits must be submitted. Late submissions will not be accepted.
DISABILITY PREFERENCE: Persons with a developmental disability, severe physical disability, or psychiatric disability submitting applications on or before the closing date who pass all parts of the examination are entitled to a disability preference. Certification from the Maryland Department of Education, Division of Rehabilitation, or an equivalent out-of-state vocational rehabilitation.
NOTE: This is a three-year apprenticeship program. Participants are under contract for that period of time.
