A fire broke out in a residence on Baltimore Street in Aberdeen, igniting a living room and causing significant damage. Firefighters responded swiftly, extinguishing the flames within ten minutes, but the incident had already caused considerable destruction.
Investigators have determined that the fire was caused by an improper charging cord connected to an e-bike. The sole occupant of the home, who chose to remain anonymous, described the chaotic scene, noting that the fire seemed to reignite even after attempts to extinguish it.
Both the resident and a neighbor attempted to use household fire extinguishers to combat the flames, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Master Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire highlighted the dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, stating that once they enter a state of thermal runaway, they become extremely difficult to extinguish.
The e-bike belonged to the victim's late mother, who had passed away in January. The occupant had intended to surprise her four children with the bike, which she had kept to honor her mother's memory.
In a related incident earlier in the day, a tool battery charger ignited a garage fire in Kingsville, forcing a mother and her newborn to evacuate. Alkire emphasized the importance of safety when charging lithium-ion batteries, advising residents to use manufacturer-approved charging cords and to charge such devices outside of their homes.
The Aberdeen resident expressed gratitude that her children were not present during the fire, reflecting on the close call. "Just the grace of God my kids weren't here," she said, visibly shaken by the experience.
