Authorities Name Man Shot by Baltimore Police After High-Speed Pursuit

The Maryland attorney general's office has released the identity of a man who was fatally shot by Baltimore Police officers after a high-speed chase that occurred early on Sunday.

Maurice Daniels, a 42-year-old resident of Millersville in Anne Arundel County, was first observed driving a vehicle associated with an armed carjacking. This sighting took place around 1:25 a.m. when a police helicopter detected the car.

Ground units quickly engaged in a pursuit that lasted approximately 20 minutes through the city, as confirmed by Police Chief Richard Worley.

The chase concluded when Daniels stopped his vehicle on Clifton Avenue at approximately 1:41 a.m. Officers approached the car, but Daniels allegedly refused to comply with their orders to exit. Instead, he locked himself inside the vehicle.

As one officer prepared to break a window to gain access, another officer noticed a firearm inside the car and alerted the others. In a matter of seconds, multiple officers discharged their weapons, resulting in Daniels' death.

According to the attorney general's office, six officers were involved in the shooting: Sgt. Kevin Rivera and Officers Charles Blackman, David Weldon, Antonio Groomes, Darrius Hicklin, and Al-Shakier Drake. A BB gun was recovered from the vehicle after the incident.

The shooting is currently under investigation by the Independent Investigations Division of the attorney general's office.
