BALTIMORE — In a move to enhance classroom focus, Baltimore City Schools will enforce a ban on student cell phone usage beginning next school year. This decision follows similar actions taken by other Maryland school districts.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools initiated a policy change in August, while Howard County Public Schools adopted similar restrictions in February. According to the new guidelines, students are permitted to bring their devices to school, but they must be turned off and stored away during school hours.
The Baltimore City Schools' policy is informed by a pilot review conducted at 25 schools over the past year. School officials noted that extensive research supports the benefits of limiting or prohibiting cell phone use in educational environments.
“A significant amount of research has demonstrated the positive impacts of limiting or forbidding the use of cell phones and personal electronic devices by students in classrooms and other school spaces,” stated the school system in a recent announcement.
The new policy aims to foster a better learning atmosphere by minimizing distractions. School officials encourage parents and students to prepare for these changes ahead of the upcoming school year.
While the State Department of Education allows individual districts to determine their own phone policies, Baltimore City Schools' decision reflects a growing trend among Maryland schools towards stricter regulations on personal electronic devices.
