Black Bear Sighted in Downtown Frederick Over the Weekend

FREDERICK, Md. — A black bear made an unexpected appearance in downtown Frederick, causing quite a buzz among residents and local businesses over the weekend.

Late Sunday night, videos began to surface on social media, capturing the bear as it roamed along N. Market Street. The sighting prompted a mix of amusement and concern among those who witnessed it.

One local establishment, Molly’s Meanderings, humorously suggested on Facebook that the bear might have been looking for good deals, stating, "A black bear wandered by after we had closed last night. Thankfully, everyone was safe—but we think he may have been hoping to catch our summer sale!"

Another social media user chimed in, joking that if downtown bars did not introduce bear-themed happy hours by the weekend, it would be a missed opportunity.

Authorities have been contacted to determine whether the bear has left the area or is still in town. This incident is not the first of its kind; a bear cub was spotted in the vicinity back in May 2023.

Frederick County is known for having one of Maryland's larger black bear populations, trailing only Allegany, Garrett, and Washington Counties.
