The Washington Commanders have parted ways with tight ends coach Ben Steele, just two days ahead of the team's training camp, which is set to begin on July 29.
Steele's dismissal follows his arrest on June 7 in Loudoun County, Virginia, where he faces charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI), refusing to submit to a blood or breath test, and resisting arrest, according to court documents.
While the Commanders did not provide a specific reason for Steele's termination, they released a statement indicating that there would be no further comments regarding the matter.
In Virginia, the charges Steele faces are classified as Class 1 misdemeanors, which may result in up to one year in jail and a maximum fine of $2,500. Additionally, a first-time DWI offense could lead to a one-year suspension of driving privileges.
Steele joined the Commanders in March after spending two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. His coaching career in the NFL began in 2014 when he served as an offensive quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Steele's court hearing is scheduled for August 13 in Loudoun County District Court.
