David Sovine, who has served as the superintendent of Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) for the past four years, has been selected as a finalist for the superintendent position in Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS). This announcement was made by the Baltimore County school system.
Sovine, who previously held the role of superintendent for Frederick County Public Schools in Virginia, announced earlier this year that he would not be pursuing a new contract when his current term concludes on June 30.
The Baltimore County school board recently voted to promote Deputy Superintendent Gary Willow to the superintendent position, effective July 1. Current Superintendent Myriam Rogers, who has been in her role for three years, revealed in February her plans to retire.
The finalists for the Baltimore County superintendent position were announced on June 12. Sovine is set to participate in a public town hall meeting on June 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, Maryland, where he will join other finalists to discuss their qualifications and visions for the school system.
Jane Lichter, chair of the Baltimore County Board of Education, expressed enthusiasm about the search for a new superintendent, stating, "The Board of Education has worked diligently to find visionary educational leaders to guide our system. We encourage the BCPS community to attend the town hall to learn more about their accomplished backgrounds and visions for BCPS."
To facilitate the search for candidates, the school board engaged Ray and Associates LLC, an executive search firm, which conducted a national search that included public and staff input through forums and an online survey.
