ELKTON, Md. — Early Wednesday morning, a fire on St. Pats Circle resulted in the destruction of two vehicles parked outside a residence. The incident, which occurred just after midnight, is suspected to involve a Molotov cocktail, according to Master Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion, which has led investigators to consider the possibility of arson. Alkire noted that the family living in the home, which includes a young child, is perplexed by the incident, stating they have no known conflicts or animosity with anyone in the area.
Surveillance footage from a neighbor's Ring camera has provided some leads, showing two individuals fleeing the scene shortly after the explosion. Alkire indicated that the suspects are believed to be juveniles, as they were dressed in dark clothing and hoodies that obscured their faces.
The seemingly random nature of the crime has caused concern among local residents, with one longtime resident, Ted Paugh, expressing disbelief that such an event could occur in their neighborhood. Paugh has lived in the area for over three decades and noted that the vulnerability of parked vehicles has now become a pressing issue for many.
“Some houses have garages, but most of us just park on the street or in our driveway,” Paugh commented, highlighting the limited options for protection against potential future incidents. “If they hit again, there’s not much we could do.”
Authorities are urging anyone who may recognize the individuals captured in the surveillance video to reach out to them at 410-386-3050.
