Dozens of residents convened at Federal Hill Park on Tuesday to address growing concerns about violent crime in their neighborhood. The meeting was prompted by a recent shooting incident that resulted in the death of a man in the 200 block of Key Highway.
Attendees engaged with representatives from the Baltimore Police Department, expressing frustrations about the lack of police action against disturbances such as car parties and loitering, which many believe contribute to the increase in violence.
On Easter Sunday, police responded to reports of a shooting on Key Highway, where they found a man with gunshot wounds who later died at the scene. Security footage obtained by WJZ captured the moments leading up to the incident, showing a group gathering before individuals fled the area.
Residents highlighted ongoing issues in the community, including disruptive late-night activities. Michael Brassert, a long-time resident, described the current state of safety as troubling, stating, "the rule of law has kind of disappeared." Another resident, Jen Covino, noted that gunshots have become a frequent occurrence, stating, "I hear them happening from my home at night."
Newcomer Amana Simmons expressed her concerns about the neighborhood's safety, saying that the violence detracts from the community's overall appeal.
During the meeting, Lt. Col. Matt Corell from the Chief of Patrol's Office listened to residents' concerns, aiming to improve police patrol strategies in the area. State Senate President Bill Ferguson and City Councilman Zac Blanchard were also present, discussing the need for a comprehensive approach to combat crime.
Blanchard pointed out that issues around the 200 block of Key Highway have persisted for years, exacerbated by disturbances from nearby shops and dirt biking. He proposed practical solutions, such as closing off parking lots after business hours to deter crime.
Residents are eager for immediate action to restore safety in their community, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the ongoing issues with car parties and gun violence.
