Appearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Hegseth defended the administration's funding request, which aims to support military operations initiated in late February. However, he faced significant pushback from various senators.
Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) emphasized the need for clear explanations regarding the funding, stating, "We need straight answers." Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) also criticized the administration's proposal, remarking, "I'll be blunt, the truth is your request does not make a lot of sense."
Hegseth was accompanied by General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, marking their first joint appearance since the escalation of military actions against Iran earlier this month.
Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) expressed concerns that the actual financial burden of the conflict could be significantly higher than the figure presented by Hegseth. He noted, "Is it much higher than I think your average American expected? Americans are paying a lot more at the pump and at the grocery store."
The Trump administration's request for $80 billion comes in the context of a broader military budget proposal of $1.5 trillion for 2027. It remains uncertain whether this funding will garner sufficient support in Congress to be approved and sent to President Trump for his signature.
