Cape Town police are currently investigating the death of Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old soccer player who represented South Africa in the World Cup. His body was found over the weekend at a property in the Schotsche Kloof neighborhood of Cape Town.
Adams' death comes just two weeks after he played a pivotal role in helping South Africa reach the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in history. The specific cause of his death has not yet been disclosed by authorities.
According to a police statement, an inquest has been opened following the discovery of Adams' body, which was reported around 11 a.m. on Saturday. The police have not provided further details regarding the circumstances of the incident.
Juanito Adams, the player's father, spoke to South African media on Sunday, expressing the family's struggle to cope with the sudden loss. He noted that they are awaiting the results of an autopsy before making any funeral arrangements.
“As you all know, it was an untimely death. The family is struggling to process it,” he said. “It won't be easy to carry on. People say it will become easier, but it won't. You just learn to live with it,” he added.
During the World Cup, Adams participated in all three of South Africa's group matches but did not play in the round of 32 loss to Canada. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie highlighted Adams' resilience, noting that he played against the Czech Republic just hours after learning of his grandmother's passing. McKenzie urged the public and media to refrain from speculation regarding the cause of death while the investigation is ongoing.
Tributes and moments of silence were observed for Adams during World Cup matches, including the quarterfinals between England and Norway, and Argentina and Switzerland.
