A bus accident in Pikesville, a suburb of Baltimore, occurred on Wednesday night, injuring at least 28 people. The Baltimore County Fire Department classified the incident as a mass casualty event.
The incident involved a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus that collided with multiple vehicles before crashing into a building located at 500 West Franklin Street. One individual is reported to be in critical condition.
According to Jerimiah Moerke, a spokesperson for the MTA, the bus initially struck a Lexus and then a Nissan before coming to a halt against the building. Emergency responders were on the scene, including several police and fire units.
Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, noted that the situation was escalated due to the number of injuries. Responders successfully extracted the bus driver from the vehicle, which was lodged into the building, and all injured individuals were transported to local hospitals for medical care.
The Baltimore City Fire Department's special rescue operations team evaluated the structural integrity of the four-story apartment building affected by the crash. They confirmed that the building's support beams were intact, though the first floor was temporarily condemned.
Authorities are advising drivers to avoid the area as emergency crews continue their operations. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway, with MTA Police, the Baltimore City Fire Department, and building inspectors actively involved.
