A peculiar incident unfolded in Beltsville on Monday when a man allegedly attempted to rob a bank while carrying a stolen kitten.
The black-and-white tuxedo kitten, named Magnolia, was taken from Pet Supplies Plus in the Chestnut Hills Shopping Center. According to local organization Beltsville Community Cats, the man had been frequenting the store for weeks, showing particular interest in the kitten.
On the day of the attempted robbery, the suspect entered a PNC Bank branch nearby, holding Magnolia. He requested a bank teller to hold the kitten while he wrote a note, which he then handed over to the employee. The note reportedly demanded cash.
Law enforcement was alerted to the situation shortly after, and officers arrived at the scene on the 10400 block of Baltimore Avenue. The man was taken into custody without incident, and thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Magnolia was found unharmed in the bank manager’s office following the arrest. The investigation into the attempted robbery is ongoing, as confirmed by Prince George’s County Police.
Store manager Aaron Kurkowski noted that the man had been visiting the pet store daily, waiting for an opportunity to take the kitten. He described how the suspect seized a key and accessed the cat adoption area when no employees were around.
Magnolia, described as a “true purr machine,” is still available for adoption and is looking for a forever home, preferably one with other cats. Interested individuals can reach out to Beltsville Community Cats at [email protected].
