PIKESVILLE, Md. — The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has confirmed the identity of the bus driver involved in a serious accident in Pikesville that resulted in multiple injuries.

Tavon Giles, who began his role as a bus operator in September 2023, was operating the LocalLink 89 route, which connects Rogers Avenue Metro Station to Owings Mills.

The incident occurred on July 8, when the bus, driven by Giles, was traveling southbound on Reisterstown Road. It collided with several vehicles before crashing into a nearby FedEx building. The crash has left 36 individuals hospitalized, including Giles, who is reported to be in critical condition.

According to Baltimore County police, the collision involved a total of twelve vehicles and necessitated the response of over 100 first responders. Fire Chief Joe Dixon described the scene as resembling a war zone, expressing relief that all involved survived the ordeal.

Surveillance footage reviewed by WMAR-2 News captured the moment the bus ran a red light and struck a white SUV, contributing to the chaos of the collision.

The Baltimore County Police Department is currently leading the investigation into the crash, with support from MTA and MTA police. An MTA spokesperson indicated that further details regarding the investigation cannot be disclosed at this time.

The cause of the crash remains under active investigation.
