Fundraisers Launched for Families Affected by Cecil County Boat Explosion

CECIL COUNTY, Md. — Following a boat explosion on the Fourth of July at Schaefer's Canal House and Marina, two fundraising efforts have been initiated to assist the families affected by the incident.

The explosion resulted in injuries to nine individuals, among them Cassandra and her fiancé Dylan, both of whom sustained severe burns and broken bones. Marissa McKinney, who is organizing one of the fundraisers, noted that their recovery will be lengthy and complicated due to the nature of their injuries.

“With the extent of their injuries, the road to recovery is going to be long and challenging,” McKinney stated, highlighting the ongoing medical care and surgeries they will need.

Another family impacted by the explosion is the Good family, who owned the 1988 Wellcraft 32-foot cruiser named “Lucky Us.” Taylor Edmond, a friend of the family and organizer of the second fundraiser, reported that three members of the Good family are in critical condition and receiving medical treatment.

“The Good family and their friends are facing a long road to recovery, both physically and emotionally,” Edmond said, emphasizing the rising medical expenses and the emotional toll of the incident.

The explosion occurred shortly after the boat had finished refueling. Fire crews received reports of the incident just after 4 p.m., and upon arrival, they found ten individuals needed evaluation. Four victims were transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center due to serious burn injuries, while others were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One person was evaluated on-site without requiring transport.

Additionally, two marina employees were hospitalized as a precaution for smoke inhalation. The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the incident, with early indications suggesting that a failure to activate the fuel vapor blower fan may have contributed to the explosion.

The scene was cleared by fire marshals shortly before 9 p.m. that evening, and fortunately, the boat itself did not sustain fire damage. The investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing.
